FAMILY: Fall/Winter Outift Inspiration Guide!

FAMILY: Fall/Winter Outift Inspiration Guide!

With Fall and Christmas Sessions coming up fast, I thought, what better time to talk about O U T F I T S !?

Outfits can really make or break the “feel” of your session. The trends change so fast too! I’m kind of a play it safe kinda gal, so I feel you’re always safe with neutrals (whites, creams, khaki) or earth tones (brown, olive green, burnt orange etc.) This is not to say other colors don’t work! In fact, I think I photograph blues 70% of the time!

The main thing I’d like you to keep in mind when it comes to colors is
1. Color casting. Does your bright red shirt reflect red off of your neck? How about onto your toddler’s cheek when you hold them? Try to stay away from bright. Bold is okay, bright can make color casts. Jewel tones are really in right now. ifthat helps you understand what I mean by “bold over bright”.
2. Your home. Where you hang your pictures can give you some inspo on colors. My house is light grey with white trim, so I Iove putting my family in warm tones to warm up my living space!
3. Your skin tone. Think of the color you look and feel your best in and go that way! I love olive green on myself because it makes my hazel eyes brighter. If yours or your child’s eyes are bright blue, soft pinks and soft blues are SO good for bringing that out. Brown eyed cuties can rock a pastel or muted yellow better than anyone too!
4. Photo location. Obviously, you don’t want to blend in, so avoid green and brown when we’re at say, Silver Falls. If we’re at the beach, you’d want to wear a color that makes you pop. Avoiding the color of sand or the color of the sky!
5. Storytelling. I never used to be a “dress” person, but let me tell you. Wearing a dress to your session helps the interaction with your kids so much! They hide behind it, they tug on it, you can twirl together, etc. Flowy dresses make a picture look more epic too!

Some more key points to remember:
1. Texture is good. You don’t ALL want to have texture but it definitely helps to add texture in 1-2 family member’s outfits. It makes a picture more interesting to look at! Texture could mean anything from a cable knit sweater, corduroy, fleece, etc.
2. Solids are okay, if there’s also some NOT solids. If dad has a plain burnt orange henley on, that’s absolutely okay, as long as everyone else doesn’t have a plain burnt orange shirt too.
3. Complimentary over matching. Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing, I like to choose one person’s outfit first. Usually Moms because our outfit usually is the toughest. So when you pick your outfit, use the colors in that to choose the rest of the family’s colors. If your dress is white with pink flowers, someone could wear that pink color. Someone could wear a a khaki because it compliments well with that white and pink, etc.
4. Layers! Layers on a person or two! Like a scarf on mom or a vest over long sleeves on big brother, etc. Again, not every person in layers, but a couple definitely make a picture more interesting! And help provide warmth!
5. Don’t forget about the shoes!

I do have a small client closet available as well if you’re needing something last minute. For now, it’s mostly baby and toddler girl things, some baby boy things, and some mama things. But it’s always growing!

I hope this was helpful to you!
